The lineup: Christian Silver (guitar, vocals), James Dolan (guitar, vocals), Justin Vooles (drums), Jonny Knight (bass), Sam Falle (keyboards).
The background: The Author are the biggest band by far on the Channel Islands, and only the fact that there are just six other outfits over there, and one of those is a jug band, diminishes this achievement. Their demo of rowdy, electronics-spattered synth-punk is Steve Lamacq's favourite of the year. They've played locally alongside Maps, the Automatic, Kasabian, the Rakes, Audio Bullies, Pigeon Detectives and Super Furry Animals and have apparently blown most of their contemporaries offstage, either by being better than them or by using a special type of wind machine only available in nearby Guernsey.
